“Make the Scenery Pretty”
This was the philosophy I learned from my grandfather, a simple milkman with only a 3rd grade education, who never went out in public unless he was looking his very best. In fact, one day while digging out the stump of a huge oak tree, the stump fell back on top of him. He got himself out of the hole, crawled inside the house, took a shower, and dressed in a suit and tie before driving himself to the doctor!
While shopping one day, I found this cross stitch from the 1930’s and purchased it because it reminded me of my granddaddy and how he taught me to always look my best when going out in public.
When Rich and I owned our portrait business in Arizona, this cross stitch hung in our photography studio; and the two black silhouettes were our logo. I loved helping clients look pretty for the camera by sharing suggestions on what colors would accent their eyes, skin tone, etc. During their session, they learned the best side of their face to put towards the camera and how to stand to look thinner. I lived in this dream job for 25 years!
It was in Arizona that I took my first jewelry-making class. Whenever I wore my own handmade jewelry in public, I always received compliments and inquiries. That’s what inspired me to begin creating similar designs so others could enjoy looking pretty and receiving compliments.
